Burma: Ethnic Nationalities Offer Hope for a Nationwide Ceasefire

More than one hundred leaders from Burma’s ethnic armed resistance organizations gathered at Law Khee Lar, Karen State from January 20 to 24, 2014 to work out a plan for a proposed nationwide ceasefire agreement with the Burma government. The ethnic leaders met and discussed the future of Burma, including how to set up a federal army in the country. Dubbed a historic ethnic summit, it is a follow-up meeting of the Armed Ethnic Organization Conference held last month in Laiza, the headquarters of the Kachin Independence Organization, in Burma’s north.   Read more....

Burma Needs a Practical Long-term Policy for the Rohingya Issue

Since Burma’s military junta officially ceded power to a quasi-civilian government in 2011, the country has received much praise and applause from the international community for its many reforms initiated by the new government. A series of peace talks with various ethnic armed groups have been held and ceasefire accords with most, if not all, of the major ethnic armed groups have been signed to end decades of wars, human rights abuse and destruction in Burma’s periphery ethnic regions.  Read more...

Amending Burma's Constitution: Mission Impossible?

The amendment of Burma’s Constitution recently has become a hot issue yet again. The lower house of Burma’s parliament has approved the formation of a committee that will review the 2008 Constitution to make necessary amendments. The opposition groups have pointed out that changes are needed in the Constitution in order to form a genuine federal  union to resolve long-standing ethnic and political conflicts in the country.  Read more...
